Welcome to the first Experts Interview Series on The Blog Incubator.
Where I, Shakir Jamal share some of the best stories and advices from the best bloggers and internet marketers and discover their secrets for you to benefit from.
This is the interview of Dave Jackson where I will be discovering the exclusive secrets of podcasting.
Dave Jackson has been podcasting since April of 2005. His podcast about podcasting and Internet Marketing has been downloaded over 1.6 million times.
He's helped hundreds of people launch podcasts and make a living online. And today, he'll help you too.
So, without any further ado let's reveal some of the exclusive secrets about podcasting from the father of podcasts.
Question 5: What are your 3 favorite podcasts?
Question 8: How can readers get in touch with you?
Dave: In 2005 I had a blog for podcasters. A friend of mine had heard about podcasting, and as soon as I dug into it I could see the huge potential. I immediately turned my blog into a podcast.
My readers said I went from being text on a page to a real person (and they could now listen to my blog in the car on the way to work)
Dave: I originally had a podcast for musicians but transitioned to teaching people about podcasting. This engages my top three passions.
It’s creative (“no rules/fcc”), it’s somewhat technical (I love gear), and I can help people on a global basis.
Dave: Podcasting has grown every year and continues to grow. You need to know WHY you are starting, WHO your audience is, WHAT you want them to do/feel.
In other words, do a little planning. Turning on a microphone and “winging it” doesn’t work. Also, realize it takes years to build an audience.
If you think you’re going to quit your day job in six months, you have better odds playing the lottery.
Dave: It’s easy to get hung up on the technology and all the shiny new things. It’s not the tech. You can get started with a $70 USB microphone like the Samson Q2U and be off to the races.
People don’t tell their friends to listen because of the audio quality - they tell their friends about the content.
With that said, you can set up a mic in the middle of the room and record three people (or use the built-in microphone of your laptop).
If your audio quality distracts me from what is being said because of how it sounds - that’s a problem.
Dave: I love the Bandrew Says podcast which is for YouTube creators (as well as microphone talk).
The No Agenda show with Adam Curry and John C Divorak. It’s a great show that dissects the media and unveils things that should be on the news but aren’t.
Marketing School with Eric Siu and Neil Patel. Quick marketing lessons that will have you taking notes on your phone.
Dave: The main key is the planning phase. You have to have a super clear picture of who you are talking to. You also have to have a clear picture of WHY you are podcasting.
Then its a matter of identifying the content that will hold your listener’s attention while moving them toward your why. It sounds simple, but it takes some thought.
Creating a podcast is not hard. Creating a GOOD podcast can be challenging.
Dave: It doesn’t have to be perfect. If we wait until whatever we are working on is perfect, we will never launch it. Start with your minimum viable product and go from there.
